Delegation and empowerment are key leadership and management skills.

This course is designed to help you explore these skills and attributes and fully appreciate what is good practice.

On completion of this course, it is expected that you will have developed your awareness of how to delegate more effectively and what pitfalls to avoid.

How to use this course
Below are a series of downloads for you. Taken together, they will lead you, in a modular basis, through the whole of our Promoting Excellence 'Delegation and Empowerment' course, and will conclude with a certificate that you can download to show you have successfully completed the training - and have been officially certificated by Promoting Excellence Limited.

Each module has video narration, so you are best to complete the course where sound will not disturb others around you. The course is linear, so you should start by downloading and completing the Introduction, followed by Module ONE, Module TWO and so forth. Your password and login ID gives you access to this page, in most cases, for a full year from purchase, so you will not need to rush, but can work methodically. Some downloads are quite large - up to 50MB or so - so you should only download the module upon which you are currently working, before progressing to the next one. Downloading everything in one go will put excessive load on the document delivery server and should be avoided.

Where a module has worksheets, bonus materials and handouts, these are listed below, in the order you will need to download them. Not all courses, and not all modules have worksheets or handouts, but where they do, they are listed below for you to download and use.

All modules are in Microsoft PowerPoint Show format. You need a copy of PowerPoint on your device to view them properly. The workbook is in PDF interactive format. The free PDF Reader from Adobe is the best way of ensuring complete functionality (the PDF viewers built-into browsers do NOT offer the full PDF specification).

Certification
When you reach the conclusion of the course, you will be able to click a link to your Promoting Excellence certificate.

Is the course for an individual or a group? Will they use this differently?
The course has been written for use by individuals or small groups. An individual will need to reflect on some of the ideas raised, and to jot down their thoughts. They may like to then discuss their ideas with peers, or a competent leader. A small group will find benefit in discussing the ideas and issues raised as a group, and perhaps agreeing on joint actions.

In each module,you can go forwards to the next slide by clicking on the button in the top right corner of each module's slides.
To signify that a slide is fully completed and ready to advance, the button-label (next to the button) will flash.

Courses work and run well on a PC - they should also work on a MAC. They may run on an iPad or a tablet, but this is not guaranteed.

MODULE ONE - What is Delegation? What is Empowerment? (ppsx file).This module gets our course underway by asking what do we mean by Delegation (and how Delegating is NOT Abdicating), and what do we mean by Empowerment? Empowering who, exactly? And to do what? Definitions are provided for you to compare with your own experiences, and we consider that Delegation is actually an essential part of every manager's job. And that every instance of Delegation should be an empowering event.
Two kinds of delegation are explored - General and Lateral, and their use explained.

MODULE TWO - How Effective are You at Empowering Others? (ppsx file)
The ability to effectively empower others differentiates good leaders from bad ones. The Promoting Excellence Delegation Checklist will help you to explore this from your own perspective - are you good at delegation? Do you have the skills needed? What can you develop further? Action plans will be developed to ensure your skills are honed as much as possible.

MODULE THREE - The Benefits of Empowerment and Good Practice (ppsx file)
Delegation is an important part of a leader’s role, but what are the benefits of empowering others to take responsibility for tasks?
In other words – why delegate? This module will help you identify those reasons, which will act as a motivator for yourself - because delegation, in its initial stages can, of course, be slower, in terms of work throughput, than retaining the task for yourself.
The module then gives Promoting Excellence's key points for successful delegation - what to do, and what NOT to do.

MODULE FOUR - Why Don't We Delegate? What Should We Avoid? (ppsx file)
This module looks at barriers to effective delegation, and the pitfalls to doing it well, it follows on directly from Module Three in this regard.
The module examines ineffective delegation - when delegation happens, but it doesn't work well, with the goal of helping you avoid this in your own practice. Finally, we present three questions to always ask yourself before delegating work.

MODULE FIVE - Become Good - and even Excellent - at Developing Others (ppsx file)
This module helps you create a development log or plan. Emotionally intelligent leaders take advantage of every opportunity to provide development and support to enhance the capabilities of their staff, just like a good parent for their child! In order to give staff empowerment, it may be interesting to ask them to complete a diagnostic to highlight their attitudes, abilities, motivation, expectations etc. This Module provides a diagnostic for use in this way, and which might also be a useful activity for staff appraisals.

This module contains a survey of the messages that are contained within, and promulgated by, a leader delegating to their staff effectively and in an empowering way.
It looks at role models of empowerment and asks whether you can find inspiration in these, or any others to aid in your delegation and empowerment journey. It then summarises key learning points from the whole course.
